Plato defined knowledge as "justified true belief" whereas Oxford English Dictionary defines it as expertise and skills acquired by a person through experience and/or education. Some prefer to define it as facts and information with the ability to use it for specific purpose.

Wikipedia characterizes traditional knowledge as "matured long-standing traditions and practices of certain region, indigenous, or local communities. It encompasses the wisdom, knowledge and teaching of these communities. Some form of traditional knowledge are expressed through stories, legends, folklore, rituals, songs, and even laws. In many cases these traditional knowledges have been passed orally from one generation to another generation".

Tribal communities are social group of humans who live in and depend on for their livelihoods on forests. They have unique identity based on their race, language, culture, and location of their habitat. They have very rich cultural traditions and strong sense of responsibility for the community. Sharing rather than owning is motto of their life.

These tribal communities are rich storehouse of traditional knowledge in the domain of art, culture, and sustainable use of natural resources available in forests. However, they have not been able to use these intellectual assets for their cultural and economic development. This project aims to develop an Information Technology infrastructure to contribute in the economic development of tribal communities by managing their intellectual assets.
